  • Sony Debuts Green Bravia TV Range

18 February, 2009, by Desire Athow

Consumer electronics giant Sony has beefed up its Bravia TV line-up with the addition of all new Bravia HDTVs that include an entire bunch of innovative features and capabilities.

Addressing a number of energy issues, including reduction in electricity bills and depleting energy resources, Sony has come up with an all new “WE5”, which it claims to be the greenest television ever.

While a majority of television sets consume power even when they are not in use, the new WE5 sports an exclusive switch that can be activated to trim down the power consumption up to zero watts when turned off.

In addition, the television also employs an innovative backlight referred to as world’s first ever “micro-tubular HCFL backlight” that can bring down active power consumption by up to 50 percent.

The new TV incorporates a “Smart Presence” sensor which senses when no one is watching the television and switches off the screen in a bid to save energy.

In addition, the company has also launched five other models, namely E5300, E5500, S5500, V5500, and W5500, and the entire new range, including WE5, features Bravia Engine 3 along with Image Blur Reduction and 100 Hz Motionflow technology for enhanced images.

Furthermore, the range also includes a “widget-rich on-screen” AppliCast technology, which offers the viewers basic internet-on-TV capability, with DLNA to help users streaming media content from their PCs.

    Our Comments

Sony's new range of television is more of an evolution rather than a revolution. It is claims to be the greenest but one can also expect it to be amongst the most expensive. The Green Bravia TV range is unlikely to become a massive hit if Sony still sells for a massive premium as it currently does.
