It seems that the race between actor Ashton Kutcher and CNN to become the first to have a million Twitter followers is on the verge of ending with the former appearing to be well placed to emerge as a clear winner.
(ed: Since this article has been written, Ashton Kutcher won the race to become the first account with one million followers, CNNBrk became the second one to reach the milestone hours later).
The renowned actor signed up with this hugely popular micro-blogging website a few months ago and started his account with a handful of followers only. But soon, he along with his wife, Demi Moore, was adding thousands of followers to his Twitter account in a day.
However, the competition seems to be really stiff with both sides have stepped up their tactics to lure followers to their respective Twitter accounts. While CNN went live on TV in its attempt to surpass Kutcher, the actor reacted by going live on Ustream.tv to win this high-profile battle.
The winner of this prestigious race will be donating 10,000 mosquito nets in Africa on World Malaria Day on 25 April.
Asserting on gaining a mammoth follower count, Kutcher said in an online video post, “I just found it astonishing that one person can actually have as big a voice online as what an entire media company can”.
In spite of the entire buzz over the race to have a million followers count, some experts even asserted that Twitter would be much better placed if it did not show its users’ follower count, and maintained that the platform should focus on effective communication rather than showing follower count.
