Nokia claims to have sold more than three million Nokia 5800 Xpressmusic smartphones in the first three months of 2009, making it the top portable music player in terms of units sold in the UK in 2009.
Noknok reports that the Nokia 5800 has been one of the fastest selling smartphones of all times at the rate of one million a month and is expected to sell 2 million phones in May and June.
Nokia chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo commented on the excellent news saying that "the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has seen very strong demand in every country where it has been launched. Already in Q1 the 5800 was Nokia’s number one revenue and gross margin generating product, and was the number one volume and value product in the UK.
Figures for the music player segment were provided by Retail analysts, GFK Retail and Technology, which classify a portable music device as one that plays music, is portable and has a 3.5mm earphone jack.
The 5800 Xpressmusic, which uses the fifth generation S60 platform, has also received a new firmware update - v21.0.0.25 - that apparently will improve the smartphone's overall performance, possibly by making it zippier, as well as making the digital camera perform better.
South East Asian models of the smartphones have already received the update and the rest of the world should follow soon. There are also rumours that the firm will update the 5800XM with a capacitive touchscreen which will improve navigation and responsiveness greatly.
The news comes as Nokia has had a rather dismal beginning of 2009 with profits falling by 88 percent for the first quarter of 2009.
