  • Microsoft Xbox 360 Sales Reaches 30 Million Worldwide

28 May, 2009, by Desire Athow

Microsoft has announced that its gaming console, the Xbox 360, has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide which by itself is not as impressive as it sounds.

To reach that number, Microsoft has taken more than three and a half years and back in January 2009, sales of the Xbox 360 had reached 27.93 million worldwide.

That means that over the last 20 weeks or so, 2.07 million Xbox 360 consoles were sold (that's around 100,000 per week). That represents a growth of 28 percent in 2009, the highest of any console according to the NPD group.

By comparison, more than 50 million Nintendo Wii have been sold as of the 31st of March 2009, a remarkable achievement given the fact that the console was released a year after the Xbox 360. Playstation 3 sales have reached more than 20 million units.

What will make Microsoft gleeful though is the fact that there are now more than 20 million active Xbox Live users, that's a whopping 67 percent of their Xbox 360 userbase. They are altogether downloaded more than 1 billion pieces of gaming and entertainment from Xbox Live Marketplace.

Other figures revealed by Microsoft's press statement include a $14.5 billion spending across all categories on the Xbox 360 with third party publishers getting nearly $6 billion in sales.
