  • Oracle Could Release Java-based Netbooks Or Smartbooks

03 June, 2009, by Desire Athow

Oracle chief exec Larry Ellison, in his first public appearance since Oracle revealed its intentions to acquire Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion, asserted that the company will continue to invest substantially in Sun's Java software for developing home and business products.

In his keynote speech at the JavaOne conference in San Francisco, Ellison vowed that Oracle will continue to pour in huge investments in further development of Sun's Java franchise, and indicated that the company may venture into Java-powered smartphone and netbook manufacturing business.

Ellison further claimed that his company has invested more than anyone else in Java technology in terms of dollars over the years, and pledged to accelerate the investments in the future.

Oracle engineers have made significant contributions to Java enterprise over the years, by adding several entities, such as real-time business activity monitoring, as well as business intelligence, he added.

He further pointed out that the “new Oracle” is planning to enter into smartphone and netbook manufacturing domains to compete with several established players like HP, Acer, Dell, Lenovo, to name a few.

Along the same line, he quoted; “I don't see why some of those devices shouldn't come from Sun. There will be computers that are fundamentally based on Java”.
