  • Toshiba TG01 Snapdragon Smartphone To Launch On O2 Next Week?

02 July, 2009, by Desire Athow

After the Palm Pre, O2 has managed to get yet another high profile smartphone it seems with the Telefonica-owned mobile network getting hold of the Toshiba TG01, technically the most advanced smartphone yet.

Moviestar in Spain and O2 in Germany have already announced that they will be selling the TG01 smartphone, which looks more like a mobile internet device than a traditional mobile phone.

TG01 costs around Eur 150 when bought with a contract and Eur 500 without commitment. The phone is also already available in Japan through NTT Docomo where it is known as the Pro Series T-01A.

Toshiba's first foray (for a long time) in the smartphone segment was announced at the beginning of the year at the Mobile World Congress and is powered by a Qualcomm 1GHz Snapdragon chipset, making it the fastest smartphone on the market.

Although it has a huge 4.1-inch touchscreen which displays 800x480 pixels, it weighs only 129g and a thickness of only 9.9mm. Other features include a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, 512MB ROM and 256MB RAM which can be complemented by a 32GB microSDHC card.

The TG01 will be running on Windows 6.1 at launch and is expected to be upgraded for free to Windows Mobile 6.5 at launch. Whether this will be enough for Windows Mobile 7 remains to be seen especially given the hardware requirements of Microsoft's forthcoming platform.
