BT, which today counts amongst UK’s most popular internet service providers, has now achieved the distinction of being the ISP with the largest number of Wi-Fi hotspots across UK and Ireland.
The company reported that it had reached the one-million Wi-Fi hotspot mark and plans to celebrate the occasion by launching a competition on February 11th to find the one millionth hotspot as the identity of the hotspot has been kept hidden by company.
Commenting on the meteoric rise in the number of Wi-Fi hotspots, Gavin Patterson, chief executive at BT Retail, said that “We have grown from 500,000 to one million hotspots within six months, and will continue to add more to meet the demand from smartphone, laptop, iPod and now e-reader users.”
According to company data, the one million Wi-Fi hotspots include 860,000 public hotspots, 137,000 business hubs, and around 3,800 Openzone installations in airports, hotels and high-street shops.
BT also announced that the company expects that the customer usage of its Wi-Fi network will exceed more than a billion minutes in year, which is will be measured from April 2009 to March 2010.
