MPs in Last-Ditch Attempt To Save McKinnon From Extradition
Now a cross party coalition of MPs have come forward in favour of the infamous UK hacker Gary McKinnon, who was charged with breaching US Military computer network.
The group of MPs have urged UK home secretary, Jacqui Smith, to stop the extradition process of the hacker, until the US authorities assure that any potential sentence will be served in UK.
According to US laws, McKinnon may serve a rigorous sentence up to 70 years, if found guilty of the illicit intrusion into US Military computer systems.
Last Thursday, David Burrowes, the shadow justice minister, brought in an ‘early-day motion’ in parliament, demanding McKinnon be allowed to serve any potential sentence given by the US authorities in the UK, owing to his current medical condition.
McKinnon is diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), characterized by peculiar behaviour of individuals while indulging in social interaction.
Burrowes asserted that the home secretary should emulate the Dutch government, which asks US to repatriate the individuals suffering from medical or mental disorders to serve their term in their home country.
