  • Western Digital Unveils Eco-friendly 2TB My Book World Edition NAS

19 February, 2009, by Desire Athow

Western Digital has released a new, updated version of its My Book World Edition NAS device compatible with Macs and PCs and will be available in 1TB and 2TB versions.

It uses Western Digital latest high capacity drives, the Caviar Green series, which means that it now consumes a third less power compared to the previous models and should have better performance.

The drive comes with a USB2.0 and a Gigabit Ethernet port; it is also UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) and DLNA 1.5 ready and features an embedded iTunes media server.

This means that it can stream your content seamlessly, in theory, with little configuration, even from a current gaming console like the Xbox 360 or a PlayStation 3.

But Computeractive found out during a test that it requires the installation of Western Digitgal's own Mionet Software which is an extra hassle and could end up reducing performance

The device also comes with remote access capabilities which means that users will be able to access the drive from anywhere across the globe provided the drive is connected online.

The My Book World Edition comes bundled with its own backup application called WD Anywhere Backup which simplifies the transfer of your files from your local PC to the NAS.

The NAS will be available from later this month and is expected to cost north of £150 for the 1TB version and around £300 for the 2TB model.
