The Great Storm of January 19th
A big storm is in progress, more accurately the Trojan, named 'Storm Worm' by antivirus vendor F-Secure, which first started to spread on Friday across Europe. The email claimed to include breaking news about the weather or even Fidel Castro, in an attempt to get people to open an executable file.
Spoofed and Spammed
I had a piece of spam email on my Blackberry this morning, offering me access to 8,000 internet addresses. Not in any way unusual but for the fact that it came from my own 'spoofed' domain - what a coincidence - and there's absolutely nothing I can do about it!
Why Phishing Works
A recent study by academics at Harvard and Berkeley reported in The Register, reveal that 23 per cent of users only look at the content of sites when deciding whether they are legitimate or not. The presence or absence of SSL certificates and the url of sites doesn't enter into the decision of these potential dupes.

More Phish Than Ever
The Register reports that cybercrooks have developed new techniques in response to increasingly aggressive moves to identify and shut down known phishing sites. In a move designed to ensure potential phishing victims always link to a live website, fraudsters have developed so-called "smart redirection" attacks.
Emails that form the basis of phishing attacks pose as security messages from online banks in an attempt to dupe a tiny proportion of recipients who happen to be customers of the bank, into visiting a bogus site and handing over account information.

Cyber Crimes More Targetted - Symantec
Silicon reports that cyber criminals are stepping up smaller, more targeted attacks as they seek to avoid detection and reap bigger profits by stealing personal and financial information, according to a report issued on Monday.
