Good to see our old pals over at AVG UK & Ireland offering Netters a free anti-rootkit application on their Web site.
Rootkits, in case you weren't aware, are a type of malware that typically hides in another application or within the operating system kernel.
According to AVG, using this approach allows malicious applications to collect passwords and sensitive data from the infected PC without the user's knowledge, and use that data for personal information theft, spam relay and other nasties.
What's interesting about rootkits is that they were originally used by hackers to cover their tracks after unauthorised access to computers.
Today, however, this approach has been modified to mask the presence of malicious software used to gather and exploit personal data such as credit card numbers etc.
