3Com launches Gigabit products geared at SMBs

Network specialist 3Com is preparing a range of Gigabit-capable Ethernet switches for small and medium businesses.

The range will include a 10-port Gigabit Power Over Ethernet model and a number of wiring closet Gigabit Ethernet switches.

The inclusion of a desktop Gigabit PoE model is significant as 3Com is one of the first manufacturers which is bringing this technology to the desktop, rather than leaving it on the racks.

PoE will allow businesses to transmit electrical power to remove devices like a wireless LAN access point, therefore reducing installation costs and improving reliability.

Other products announced will include a 48-port Gigabit switch and a 24-port Gigabit PoE switch. No UK release date has been announced yet.

This is the first major product launch by 3Com since being acquired by Bain Capital Partners, a private investment firm, for USD 2.2 bn.
