Dell buys e-Mail service for $155 million

Computer manufacturer Dell is slowly morphing into a service company through the acquisition of another service company.

The firm completed the purchase of MessageOne for $155 million and comes after the company purchased a few other companies including software firm Everdream, privately held Silverback technologies, Music company Zing and Equallogic.

The company which was founded by none other than Michael Dells' own brother, operates in the field of email archiving and management, allowing its customers to reduce downtime due to email system failings.

In 2007, Google acquired Postini which was a rival to Messageone. The purchase hints at a slight change in Dell's direction as it looks to take on competitors like IBM and HP which get a substantial chunk of their revenues through services, rather than selling white boxes and hardware.
