Is Business Continuity as important as disaster recovery?

In fact, Disaster Recovery planning as a resource has permeated business culture beyond the ‘smoking hole in the ground’ scenario and, particularly in the major urban centres, I am seeing more and more organisations putting ‘soft-BCP’ (Business Continuity Planning) in place.

These looser arrangements cover a wider range of scenarios and enable a large number of employees to continue to provide service by working from home or off-site, via a meshed together ‘network’ of webmail, personal email accounts, remote access to files and mobile phones.

While there are a number of considerations with such soft BCP plans, not least data security and corporate liability for employee communications, many organisations take a pragmatic view of such arrangements as a good solution to get them through a crisis, for example a prolonged underground strike, motorway closure or flu epidemic, rather than a disaster.
