Researchers at Microsoft have finally proved the much touted ‘six degrees of separation theory’, which speaks about the email links among the entire population of the world.
The researchers have studied 30 billion messages sent during a month in 2006, and purported that every person on this planet is linked through six acquaintances in between.
Eric Horvitz, one of the researchers, is shocked by the findings, and contemplated the existence of a social connectivity constant for humanity.
He further stated that people on this planet have always suspected that they are close, “But we are showing on a very large scale that this idea goes beyond folklore.”
‘Degree of separation’ is a sociological concept that tells about the social distance between individuals, which implies that personal interaction between any two individuals comes under 1 degree separation, and both of them are 2 degrees away from each other’s acquaintances, and so on.
The concept of six degrees became famous after the introduction of a popular parlour game ‘Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon’ in 1994, by the students of Albright College in Pennsylvania.
