A Finnish firm is marketing an interesting add-on for Visa credit and debit cards - a 2D barcode that is added to the card for loyalty purposes.
This rather neat idea centres on a peel-and-stick barcode that shoppers at UpCode's Halpa Halli retail chain can add to the card and uses a clip-on reader for the users' mobile phone.
(Well, it is Finland, home of the mobile)
The idea is that shoppers will be able to use their Visa cards in real time to receive store information and incentives that are being offered by scanning the UpCode on cards.
The big question of course, is whether other retail chains will adopt the system and I can get rid of the various plastic loyalty cards that clog up my wallet...
