There will be a sharp rise in the number of subscribers of Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) services this year, if predictions made by Gartner are to ring true.
The market research firm predicted that the number of subscriptions for IPTV is expected to reach a whopping 19.6 million in 2008, registering an increase of 64.1 percent over last year.
The Gartner report also predicts rise in revenues from IPTV services with a projection of USD4.5 billion this year, which shows an incredible growth of 93.5 percent against the last year’s earnings of USD2.3 billion; in addition, the analyst firm speculated that the revenues from IPTV service will reach a whopping USD19 billion by 2012, if the current trend continues.
Western Europe has the largest proportion of IPTV subscribers, with 8.2 million subscriptions this year, whereas North America leads in terms of revenues with a forecast of USD2 billion in 2008, Gartner stated in its report.
Elroy Jopling, Gartner’s Research Director stated that the arrival of new entrants in the IPTV domain played a major role in rapid growth of the services.
