Micro blogging website Twitter has quietly started to roll out text advertising formats on the right hand side of the profile page, currently limiting them to in-house promotion campaigns.
Amongst them are Twitter search functionality, a discovery tool that allows users to find out what's happening in real time and Twitter widgets which allows tweets to be displayed on a web page.
Twitter is expected to introduce advertising later this year as pressure for the startup to generate much needed revenue mounts.
According to Brandrepublic, Twitter will be rolling out the text advertising format to third parties as well and it is likely that adverts will appear in the search results page as well.
While some like Techcrunch's Michael Arrington say that Twitter search has a "tremendous revenue opportunity", others say that brand advertising on Twitter could well be a double-edged sword that would need to be carefully handled.
Twitter Japan has already started to include advertising across the site since its launch. In related news, a Twitter related Job search service has launched which pool together 25,000 jobs mentioned on the micro blogging website.

It will be very interesting to find out how twitters will react to the introduction of advertising. Twitter needs to generate revenues as the more popular it becomes, the more capital it will burn and the more impatient its investors will be.
