Samsung Debuts Cheapo Tocco Lite Smartphone

Korean Mobile Phone Manufacturer Samsung has unleashed yet another member from its popular Tocco Family with a few corners cut to bring down the price.

First and foremost, this Tocco lite version - which was launched a few weeks ago as the S5230 - does not come with 3G or Wifi and is limited to GPRS/EDGE. But it does keep the full size touchscreen of its elder Tocco brother and can display a not-too-shabby 240x400 pixels on its 3-inch diagonal.

Users will be able to access the usual features - browser, media player etc - through the TouchWiz user interface. Samsung has stressed the importance of social networking by integrating native access to MySpace, Facebook or YouTube thanks to widgets.

Other significant features include Bluetooth compatibility, a 3.2-megapixel camera (with smile and face detection), support for 8GB microSD cards, built-in accelerometer, a FM radio and a rather slimline body.

Samsung is evidently trying to tackle the lower end of the touchscreen market where LG with the Cookie and ZTE with its £50 touchscreen smartphones are becoming increasingly aggressive. The phone is expected to come in May 2009 but neither the price nor the network on which it will appear have been revealed.

Our Comments

Samsung means business with the Tocco Lite with a staggering £1.5 million marketing campaign as it wants to make its way in the "ultra competitive midrange" segment. We suspect that it will be pitted against the LG Cookie which is the cheapest touchscreen on the market and available on sub £10 contracts.
