Nokia N86 8-megapixel Smartphone To Be Available On The 19th

Many already consider the Nokia N86 to be the best camera phone on the market. The snap-shooter will be available from the 19th of June at Carphone Warehouse before becoming more widely available a month later.

Launched on the same day as the iPhone 3G S, the N86 features Carl Zeiss optics, a 28mm wide-angle lens, two LED flashes and a variable aperture - the first phone to integrate this functionality - which works well with low and bright light situation.

There's also a mechanical shutter that allows shutter speeds as fast as 1/1000th second, ideal for fast action snaps.

It is also the first Nokia phone to integrate the third version of Nokia Maps "with better maps than ever before, enhanced Drive and Walk navigation and synchronisation with Ovi Maps Beta for Web" as well as the first with native OVI store application.

Otherwise, the N86 is a pretty standard smartphone powered by Symbian's S60 3rd edition OS platform. It has a 2.6-inch QVGA AMOLED screen, 8GB internal storage as well as A-GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth. You can add another 16GB worth of memory thanks to the microSD card reader and Nokia has judiciously decided to invluce a 3.5mm headphoe jack.

You can preorder the N86 for £399 from Nokia SIM Free. The phone is cheaper in mainland Europe where you can get it for a mere 375 Euros. You will be able to get it from all other networks - apart from Vodafone - from mid July.

Nice to see that at least one manufacturer has decided to give a fresh look to picture snapping on cameraphones. Sony has the Cybershot range but it has yet managed to bring any notable improvements apart from an improvement in the pixel count of the camera phone. Nokia for once has been able to add real value to an existing segment.
