Apple Sells 1 Million iPhone 3G S In 72 Hours

Apple has announced that it sold more than one million iPhone 3G S in three days, that's equivalent to four iPhones sold every second for the first 72 hours after the company's latest phone was launched.

That, observers said, matched the rollout of the iPhone 3G over last year even though the iconic phone was launched in eight rather than 21 territories. The iPhone 3G S has been sold in the US and seven other countries including UK since Friday and sales have surpassed even the most optimist predictions by analysts.

No details have been released as to what fraction of the iPhone 3G S was purchased by new AT&T subscribers but Gene Munster from Piper Jaffray carried out some surveys which revealed that 28 percent of iPhone 3G S purchasers switched networks to AT&T compared to 52 percent in 2007.

Furthermore, six million customers worldwide have downloaded the new iPhone 3.0 software update, an estimated 14 percent of the total number of iPhone and iPod touch users that can install the upgrade.

In a press statement, the company bullishly claimed that Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning, adding "with over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”

It was also revealed that the company's CEO, Steve Jobs, has had a liver transplant two months ago. Rumours of his ill health at the beginning of the year prompted damaging speculations about the company's next head honcho and caused Apple's shares to jitter.
