O2 To Reward Top App With £10,000 Via Litmus

O2 has launched an online only competition called O2 App Showdown which aims at finding the best iPhone application and offer the winning App developers a £10,000 cash prize.

O2 has launched an online only competition called O2 App Showdown which aims at finding the best iPhone application and offer the winning App developers a £10,000 cash prize.

Interestingly, the competition is run by O2 Litmus, which is described as a platform "that allows application developers to their apps to an audience made up of savvy, incentivised O2 UK customers".

O2 said that iPhone users are eligible to become a member of the judging panel and O2's customers will ultimately decide who the winner of the competition will be. The "App Showdown" will run for two months and the winning developer will have their application promoted to O2's iPhone UK customers.

Litmus, as it turns out, will not only compete with Apple's App Store but is also set to support all major mobile platforms. Lauched in December 2008, it has not managed to attract as many applications as it might have initially thought.

There's a dedicated iPhone section on Litmus and the grand total of iPhone apps it current host is zero. No wonder therefore that O2 is trying to beef up the number of iPhone applications on Litmus.

O2 marketing director Peter Rampling said that “Since we launched Litmus last year, we’ve seen some fantastic innovation and I believe that working together with the world-wide Litmus community we can develop amazing applications for O2 customers, initially on iPhone and then all our devices – the beauty of Litmus is that we will have a community of O2 customers who will also vote for their favourite.”
