With less than 30 minutes to go, more news have emerged about the new slim PS3 console which can now be pre-ordered in the US from Sears & K-Mart from $299.99 with a release date for Monday 24th.
Both websites list the new gaming console although none of them have a photo of the actual device. The new model, coined the PS3 Slim, will come with a 120GB hard disk drive, possibly the more important new feature outside a slimmer chassis.
Techradar, on the other hand, understands that the PS3 Slim will be realsed in the UK on Friday 11th of September because it corresponds to the time needed to sell the 150,000 Playstation consoles remaining in the country. Furthermore, a Friday would be useful for those looking to play over the weekend and hopefully start buying games and posting reviews on social networking websites.
The PS3 also comes with a Blu-ray player, a free Playstation Network Membership, a Dual Shock 3 controller and a HDMI output for 1080p resolution.
After the 20GB and 40GB, Sony has started phasing out the old 80GB PS3 and could possibly launch a PS3 with a hard disk capacity higher than 160GB.
There is already a booming business of 320GB laptop hard disk drives costing well below £50 which can be swapped rather easily with the existing storage drive, within minutes as Gamespot UK demonstrates.
It is likely that the two main competitors, the Nintendo Wii and the Xbox 360, will engage in a price war by the end of the year (i.e just before Christmas) to boost their marketshare. The Playstation 3 still carries the highest pricetag of the three gaming consoles and in a recession, this doesn't help at all.
