German national carrier, Deutsche Telekom are seeking approval from an extraordinary general meeting of shareholders to merge their domestic business units. Chairman of the Board of Management René Obermann stated "Now is the right time to merge our mobile and fixed-network business. Two healthy, competitive business areas will become even stronger by joining forces,".
The plan will allow DT to offer integrated land and mobile packages to an existing and loyal fixed line customer base. Currently only around 20% of DT consumers are choosing both their fixed and mobile phones from the company. Obermann announced that a increase of just one percent of remaining customers choosing both solutions from DT could net the company an extra €100m in revenue. The move follows consolidation in the UK market and the existing agreement to merge the UK arms of T-Mobile and Orange. Expect more market consolidation.
