Qualcomm opens augmented reality lab

San Diego chip shop Qualcomm has opened a new research facility which will develop augmented reality in Austria.

The new lab - which will house staff from recently acquired outfit Imagination Computer Services - will look into methods for adding computer generated elements to real life video and photos mainly on mobile handsets.

Qualcomm reckons that, "with the help of augmented reality, the real world could be clicked and linked as cyberspace could be seen by people as an integral part of their surrounding physical world."

The technology can be used to provide informational overlays in 3D mapping applications and has obvious uses in entertainment software, as our picture demonstrates.
