The Blu-ray Disc Association recently announced two new flavours of Blu-ray Disc technology which can hold up to 128GB of data.
The specifications for BDXLTM (High Capacity Recordable and Rewritable discs) and IH-BD (Intra-Hybrid discs) will offer write-once options on 100GB and 128GB capacity discs and rewritable capability on 100GB discs. The format will initially be targeted at industries with large archiving needs like broadcasters and hospitals.
The extra capacity comes from using either three or four recordable layers, which means that the new media won't be backward compatible with current readers or writers.
The Hybrid disks have a single layer of write once storage - meaning that critical data cannot be accidentally deleted - as well as a large chunk of rewrite-able memory in a single disk.
The specifications for the new standard are expected to be finalised in the next few months.
