Social networking giant Facebook has announced on its official blog that the company will be soon rolling out a new feature for the social network, called 'Community Pages'.
This will contain information about topics that are popular among its 400 million or users worldwide.
According to the Facebook blog, the 'Community Pages' will be created on the basis of the 'Fan Pages' joined by the users and will take information from the content from those pages along with websites like Wikipedia.
Explaining the concept behind the new Facebook feature, Alex Li of Facebook, wrote on the company's official blog that “Community Pages are a new type of Facebook Page dedicated to a topic or experience that is owned collectively by the community connected to it. Just like official Pages for businesses, organizations and public figures.”
Facebook said that the Community Pages were designed to bring the Facebook users more closer by offering them common topics of discussion.
The website, taking a leaf from Twitter's book, has decided to mould itself into an information hub rather than being merely a social networking platform.
Facebook plans to offer its users a chance to gather information about their favourite topics of interest and connect with people that have similar tastes.
There are chances that Facebook want to create user generated content on a grander scale. UCG is good for SEO especially since it is unique to the site and written around a particular subject. Knol and Wikipedia might have found another rival.
