LG launches smartphone for beginners

LG has launched an Android smartphone it says is aimed at "first-time smartphone users"

The Optimus GT540 has a 3-inch 420x320 pixels resistive touchscreen, HSDPA, WiFi, GPS and its internal storage can be expanded to 32GB via a microSD card. It running Android 1.6 Donut rather than v2.1 Eclair.

A selection of widgets caters for social networkers which are handled by a social network manager, set up for use with Facebook, Twitter and Bebo accounts.

The handset also sports a 3-megapixel camera with flash and autofocus, a built in video editor and media player that can record in DivX and Xvid format.

The phone is released in the UK today and will initially be available exclusively on O2 for a limited period.

LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company president and CEO, Dr. Skott Ahn, said of the phone that it is "a device that was designed for regular people who want to jump into the smartphone experience but have been hesitant to do so because of the learning curve."
