The most widely used application on nearly all smartphone platforms is Facebook, says a report compiled by Nielsen Wire.
The only exception to Facebook's dominance was on Android-based devices, where the most-used application was Google Maps, with Facebook coming a close second.
Neilsen's data was collected from a survey of 4,200 mobile users who had downloaded mobile applications over the last 30 days.
The report illustrated the fact that smartphone users have an average 22 applications installed on their phones, whereas a standard feature phone user has only 10 applications.
Of all categories of application downloaded for both smartphones and feature phones during the study, the most popular was games. This was closely followed by news and weather, maps/navigation and social networking for smartphones, but feature phone users downloaded more music than map/navigation applications.
