BP has purchased the top spot on Google searches for the term "oil spill" in a bid to turn around the flood of negative publicity surrounding its disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.
The UK-based energy company responsible for the recent oil spill from its Deep Water Horizon oil rig has purchased the top search results on Google and Yahoo, and is using them to display an advertisement with the tag line: "Learn more about how BP is helping".
The company believes that the move will help it reconnect with the public by providing them with information on the oil spill and what BP is doing to control the damage.
Speaking to The Telegraph, Toby Odone, a spokesperson for the company, said: “We have bought search terms on search engines like Google to make it easier for people to find out more about our efforts in the Gulf.”
He also added that the move would help guide those affected by the environmental disaster towards the information they need to file claims, sign up for volunteer work and report oil on beaches.
