Samsung claims world’s fastest Blu-ray drive

Samsung has announced a new Blu-ray combo disc drive, the SH-B123, which it reckons is the world’s fastest, boasting as it does a 12X read speed.

The internal-mount drive also reads CDs at up to 48X and DVDs at up to 16X speeds.

The drive uses two lenses and a two-laser diode format and boasts 'Spherical Abberation Compensation Technology', (SACT) which is claimed to improve the reading of discs of varying thickness.

Samsung says the drive also lowers power consumption to an average 25 per cent lower than comparable drives in the market.

Claimed read/write speeds are as follows: 12X BD-ROM read, 8x BD R/RE/DL read, 48X CD-ROM, 40X CD-RW, 16X DVD±R recording, 12X DVD-RAM recording, 8X DVD±R Dual Layer recording, 8X DVD+RW recording, 6X DVD-RW recording

The device comes with Cyberlink's Trutheater software which turns DVD output into a pseudo-HD resolution

The SH-B123 launches in July 2010 and pricing will become known nearer that date. monitors all leading technology stories and rounds them up to help you save time hunting them down.
