Online retail company eBay has announced the acquisition of the barcode scanning application RedLaser, the Wall Street Journal has reported.
RedLaser (http://redlaser.com/) is an iPhone application that allows users to scan barcodes on products they are purchasing and compare prices online almost immediately.
EBay announced the acquisition after the stock markets closed on Wednesday, though it did not reveal any financial details.
The technology behind RedLaser was developed by Occipital, which has revealed on its blog that it will remain independent, despite the purchase of RedLaser.
EBay will employ a new team to run RedLaser.
According to the blog, RedLaser has been downloaded more than 2 million times.
Ebay, the first company to use this technology for mobile devices, plans to integrate RedLaser into its current iPhone applications to make online shopping easier for customers.
