Orange is reportedly considering joining the BBC-led IPTV platform Project Canvas, following the departure from the joint ventureof Channel 5, the Guardian has has reported.
Project Canvas, which recently received the approval of the BBC Trust, is set to bring together major UK broadcasters, ISPs and wireless carriers to develop a common IPTV platform.
Partners involved in the project are broadcasters BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and communications companies Arqiva, BT and TalkTalk.
The Guardian quoted one industry source familiar with the situation, who said: “Orange has definitely held talks with them, they have been keen to be involved for some time although I think it went cold [for a while] when they decided to wholly focus on the integration with T-Mobile.”
Virgin Media is expected to complain to UK telecom regulator Ofcom about Project Canvas, arguing that it will breach competition laws, but Ofcom has said it is yet to receive a complaint.
An Ofcom spokesperson said: "We have not received a complaint about Canvas, but if one were to be made to us on competition grounds we would consider it carefully working closely with the OFT."
