Councillor John Dixon may face disciplinary action from the Welsh public standards authority over an "offensive" tweet aimed at the Church of Scientology.
The Guardian reports that the Welsh public standards watchdog has said that Dixon, having called the Church of Scientology "stupid" on Twitter, is "likely" to have breached the code of conduct for the local authority.
The Cardiff councillor had tweeted: “I didn't know the Scientologists had a church on Tottenham Court Road. Just hurried past in case the stupid rubs off.”
The Welsh public standards watchdog has now initiated an investigation in to the matter following complaints from a member of the Church of Scientology, which has Tom Cruise, John Travolta and Kirstie Allie as followers.
Following the news about a possible disciplinary action, the number of Dixon's followers on Twitter had tripled, with many leaving tweets of support for the Liberal Democrat.
One supporter wrote: "Instead of a disciplinary hearing, they should canvas all the electorate to see if they agree with you. I think they just might."
