Hewlett-Packard (HP) has listed the Windows 7 HP Slate 500 tablet device on its company website, confirming reports that the 'Slate' device may still be in development.
The site states that the device will run on the Windows 7 Premium OS.
The news comes as a surprise as the company had recently acquired smartphone maker Palm for $1.2 billion and was expected to use its webOS operating system to power any HP tablet PCs.
PC World as also unearthed a trademark application filed by HP for the term Palmpad with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, indicating that the company is developing a webOS based tablet as well.
When contacted about the HP Slate 500 device, a company spokesperson said that the device was in its customer evaluation phase, and so only a few selected customers will be provided with prototypes for testing.
A spokesperson for HP said: "We're in customer evaluations now and will make a determination soon on the next steps."
