Mexican film maverick Guillermo del Toro has announced that he's now involved with a big gaming project, which will be officially unveiled in a few weeks.
Speaking to MTV News, del Toro said, "We're going to do games that are going to be technically and narratively very interesting." Del Toro says he's hooked up with a "big company" in the games business, and that we should expect an official announcement in the "next few weeks."
However, the man behind Pan's Labyrinth wouldn't reveal which games publisher he was collaborating with, saying the gaming giant "would probably shoot me in the head" if he spilled any more beans. However, del Toro says the agreement is "not a development deal," adding: "We're going to do it. We're doing them. And we're going to announce it soon enough."
The news comes just a couple of months after del Toro announced he was pulling out of directing the forthcoming movie of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit, due to scheduling commitments.
Del Toro joins a number of film aficionados who've attempted to turn their hands to game development, including Steven Spielberg and Clive Barker. It's not known whether the new game will be based on an original game concept, as with Spielberg's Boom Blox, or if it will be a film tie-in. MTV News also speculates that it could be a new game based on The Hobbit. Either way, it looks as though we only have a short while to wait until we find out all the details.
Del Toro has a long list of credits as a producer, director and writer, including directing and writing Hellboy and its sequel, and performing all three jobs on Pan's Labyrinth. According to recent reports, he's also rumoured to be collaborating with Avatar director James Cameron on a 3D film adaptation of HP Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness.
