O2 has put up the specs page for the forthcoming Xperia X8 smartphone which looks a lot like a simpler, less expensive version of the popular X10 handset and says that the device will go on sale in September.
The X8 comes with Android OS (v1.6 by the looks of it) with Sony Ericsson's proprietary Timescape user interface, a 3-inch capacitive touchscreen with a 320x480 pixels resolution, a 3.2-megapixel camera, geotagging, exchangeable back covers, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity.
Engadget says that it will go on sale for 259 Euros SIM Free, which is around £215. A quick look at Expansys shows that the phone would face the likes of the HTC Tattoo, the Acer Liquid or the Nokia E71.
It would also be extremely interesting to see how Sony Ericsson positions the phone vis-a-vis the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Pro Mini which costs only £180 on PAYG and comes with a superior camera but a smaller screen.
Unfortunately O2 doesn't allow users to register their interest on its website yet for the X8 yet.
