Recognising the growing use of iDevices in education, Apple has launched a Volume Purchasing programme for schools and colleges wanting to use iOS4 Apps.
According to Apple, the iTunes Volume Purchase scheme makes it easy for educational institutions to purchase mobile apps in volume and distribute them to users.
Volume Vouchers can be purchased at the Apple Store for Education in denominations between $100 and $10,000 and can used to obtain download codes which can be distributed to students. Apple has set the minumum purchase at 20 apps and says that some developers will offer student discounts on the normal price.
Apps can then be downloaded through the normal iTunes channels and installed on devices including the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.
Apple has always offered Volume Licensing and discounts on its grown-up software for students and educational institutions but this is the first time such a scheme has been set up to include the company's portable devices.
Theres no sign as yet of the Volume Purchase scheme on the UK Apple site but we suspect that's just a matter of time.
