Microsoft's Xbox 360 games console has overtaken Nintendo's Wii as the most sold console in the US for July, reaching the top-spot for the first time in three years.
According to data released by research firm NDP Group, Microsoft sold 443,500 units in July, significantly higher than the 253,900 Wii units sold by Nintendo in the US.
Sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 also saw a rise in July, increasing by 76 per cent to 214,500 units.
The rise in Xbox 360 sales is being credited to the wireless internet functionality available on all new 'slim' consoles.
NDP Group analyst Anita Frazier said that the last time Xbox 360 held the top-spot was thanks to the success of its Halo 3 exclusive video game title.
Frazier said in a statement: “Xbox 360 was the top-selling hardware platform for the month, driven by sales of the new slim format.”
The rise in Xbox 360 sale has fuelled 12 per cent growth in hardware sales, which is balancing the 8 per cent decline in software sales, the NDP report said.
