More rumours have surfaced about the potential launch of a 7-inch Apple iPad device later this year according to newspapers in Taiwan.
Citing anonymous sources in the Taiwanese ODM/OEM market, Chinese-language Economic Daily News newspaper said that several component manufacturers had already won contracts to build a smaller version of the iPad.
EDN provided with more details regarding the iPad mini including a weight of around 500g (compared to 700g for the normal version) and the use of a 7-inch IPS display (like its bigger brother) rather than OLED display.
The report also mentioned Compal Electronics as being the contractor in charge of building the new iPad while Chimei Innolux and Cando Corporation have apparently bagged the contracts for the IPS display and the touch screen respectively.
Earlier this month, Digitimes, another Taiwanese newspaper, wrote that Apple was indeed preparing for a smaller version of the tablet. The news outlet predicted that it would also come with the same resolution and a faster ARM Cortex A9 processor.
Does it make sense for Apple to release a smaller version of the iPad? Would you buy an iPad Mini?
