Casual puzzlers, Facebook farm sims and gimmicky Wii shakers might be getting the mainstream attention, but at the moment, the big money is being generated by first-person shooters. Forget Mario, Sonic or Zelda; Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is now officially the UK's biggest selling game ever.
The figures come from GFK Chart-Track, which compiles the weekly retail games chart used by ELSPA. According to Chart-Track, Modern Warfare 2 took just 41 weeks to rack up enough sales for the record, and only three of these weeks saw the game exit the top 10 chart. One of the low periods was in fact last week, in which the game tumbled ten places from number 8 to number 18.
The previous best-selling game in the UK was Nintendo's jumped-up memory test, Prof Kawashima's Brain Training, which took much longer to break the record. According to Chart-Track, Brain Training took 36 months to nab the top spot from the previous record holder; Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
This isn't the first sales record achieved by Activision's current-tech shooter. The game has already been crowned the most successful entertainment launch of all time, bringing in £242.4 million after just 24 hours on sale, thanks to a large number of pre-orders and long queues outside retailers.
The game also notably banked half a billion US dollars in the first five days it was on sale, after it was launched last November.
