eBay has launched a new environment friendly recyclable box for sellers to ship their products in.
The idea behind the new initiative is that sellers and buyers will reuse the box for further shipping, thereby reducing waste from packaging material.
According to eBay, the boxes will made from material certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
The scheme, which will begin in the US from October, plans to put around 100,000 boxes in circulation. Sellers will have to specifically request for a box in order to receive one.
eBay believes that if each box is used at least five times, the savings will be equal to around 4,000 trees, 2.4 million gallons of water and energy to power 49 homes every year.
The company will also set-up a special web page for the recipients of the boxes, on which they can register their box and give updates on its condition. The company will use the information to track the boxes and plan future replacements when a box gets too damaged.
