The Open Source Consortium has urged UK telecom and media regulator Ofcom to study the impact Project Canvas may have on the hardware and software markets.
The BBC led Project Canvas is slated to hit the market in the first half of 2011, under the name YouView. It will allow users to watch on-demand movies and TV programs through their internet enabled TVs.
Project Canvas is an IPTV venture initiated by the BBC and involving broadcaster and companies like Channel 4, Channel 5, ITV, TalkTalk, BT and Arqiva.
The OSC joins BSkyB and Virgin Media in opposing the project.
In its complaint to Ofcom, OSC stated: “The OSC believes this will have adverse consequences for the device and software sector, diminishing consumer choice and causing inevitable consumer harm.”
According to the OSC, Ofcom should go through the wider effects Project Canvas will have on the market. It believes that the BBC and other project partners will limit technological choice, setting arbitrary conditions and mandate branding decisions.
