Apple outs AirPrint to iOS developers

Apple has seeded a beta version of the AirPrint wireless printer application to iOS4 developers.

The software - which is expected to become part of the free iOS4.2 software update which will bring the iPad into line with other iDevices - will allow wireless printing of documents from the iPhone 4 and 3Gs, the iPad and 3rd generation iPod Touches and newer.

Initially the new technology will only work with HP ePrint hardware, or through a wi-fi-connected Mac or PC, but other printer makers are expected to be added to the roster of compatible devices in the course of time.

“AirPrint is Apple’s powerful new printing architecture that matches the simplicity of iOS - no set up, no configuration, no printer drivers and no software to download,” enthused Apple second-in-command Philip Schiller.
