Amazon Web Services has announced the availability of its Amazon Linux AMI cloud-based service.
The service will run on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud platform and will give direct competition to Red Hat's Linux-based enterprise cloud service.
Even though Red Hat is the market leader when it comes to enterprise Linux market, the new Amazon service threatens Red Hat in the cloud services domain, in which Red Hat does not have much to offer.
According to Amazon, the service, which will be provided to EC2 customer without any additional charges, is a stable, secure, and provides a high performance execution environment for applications running on Amazon EC2.
Explaining the features offered by the new service, which is compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Amazon said: “It also includes several packages that enable easy integration with AWS, including launch configuration tools and many popular AWS libraries and tools.”
According to industry experts, Red Hat's cloud strategy is based on client retention, meaning IT decision makers should carefully look into the price model offered by both Linux-based cloud services before making an investment.
