RIM's latest Blackberry handset, the Torch 9800, has gone on preorder at Vodafone UK where it will be available for free on pay monthly plans starting from £40.
Vodafone says that it will start sending the handset to customers from the 27th of September; the £40 per month offer comes with Blackberry email service, 1200 minutes, unlimited texts and 500MB data.
Bumping your package to 3000 minutes will cost an additional £10 per month; all contracts are 24 months ones.
If you intend to use the phone for data mostly, there's a cheap £20 per month package which gives you 100 minutes, 500 texts, 500MB and Blackberry email, but you will still have to pay a whopping £399 initially to get the phone.
The Torch comes with a 624MHz Qualcomm processor, a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen display with a 480x360 pixels resolution and Blackberry 6 OS.
There's a slide out QWERTY keyboard, a 5-megapixel camera with flash and AF plus Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Twitter Apps, 512MB RAM, 4.5GB onboard storage, a 4GB microSD card and a 1300mAh battery
It's likely that other mobile phone operators will adopt the BB Torch 9800 but we're not sure whether the £40 per month will manage to sway customers away from the likes of the HTC Desire Z or Apple's iPhone.
