Canonical has confirmed that the upcoming Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat will be officially launched on Sunday.
The new Ubuntu will come with an updated Ubuntu One music streaming and purchasing client for Ubuntu users, and, for the first time, will be complimented by iPhone and Android applications, allowing users to stream their purchased music tracks on their smartphones from their Ubuntu One account and synchronise files between the smartphone, Ubuntu and the Ubuntu One client for Windows PCs.
Previously, Ubuntu One only allowed users to store and sync their contacts, bookmarks, files and notes on the cloud, but now Canonical has introduced the music streaming feature to provide users an enhanced media experience on the open source platform.
Canonical vice president of business development Steve George, said in a statement to The Register: “In music, people want to play their music at work and home. One of the big use-cases was people wanting to listen to music on their way home. So we have done mobile streaming.”
