Researchers at IBM believe that they can develop supercomputers that are not only the size of a sugar cube but will be faster and more greener than existing super-computers.
According to BBC News, researchers at IBM Zurich Labs say that their aim is not only to reduce the size of supercomputers but also to make them more energy efficient.
IBM believes that, in the future, a supercomputer's cost will not depend on the hardware but on its green credentials.
Dr Bruno Michel, a lead researcher at the Big Blue's Zurich labs, said that they had already built a prototype model that demonstrates the water cooling system that could be used in the supercomputers.
Dubbed as Aquasar, the super-computer is stored in a rack bigger than a refrigerator and has processors stacked on top of each other, all being cooled by the water flowing between each one.
“In the past, computers were dominated by hardware costs - 50 years ago you could hold one transistor and it cost a dollar, or a franc. In the future, computers will be dominated by energy costs - to run a data centre will cost more than to build it,” he said.
