The Jolicloud Jolibook netbook which is based on an alternative Linux-based operating system is set to go on sale in the UK as from today.
According to Netbooknews, the device may cost as little as £279 which is a fair price to pay for a laptop with a very decent specification list
For roughly the same price of the Acer Aspire One D255 netbook, which comes with the same specs, you get a dual core Intel Atom N550 CPU clocked at 1.5GHz, 2GB RAM, a 250GB hard disk drive and a 10.1-inch LCD screen.
Arguably, the fact that it doesn't come with Microsoft Windows 7 means that the profit margin on the Jolicloud netbook is likely to be as high or even higher than on the D255.
The main selling point of the Jolibook is that its operating system, Jolicloud OS, is a cloud based operating system which should, in theory, run faster and reduce operating costs for its users.
It will be interesting to find out whether an ARM-based version of the netbook is released at some point in the future with flash memory rather than a big hard disk drive.
