Next-gen Samsung tablets to use ARM chips

Samsung has announced that its next-generation tablet devices will run exclusively on ARM architecture.

The move comes as little surprise as the Korean electronics giant is one of the biggest manufacturers of chips based on the Brit chip shop's designs.

Digitimes says the forthcoming Orion slates will be based on ARM's Cortex-A9-based dual-core processor created at Samsung's own 32nm fab, while GPU duties will be left to a quad-core Mali-400, also designed by ARM.

The Cambridge-based chip outfit recently announced that a new Mali-T604 GPU with five times the performance of the current 400 iterations is in development and could be seen in devices in the next couple of years.
